Since August, my parents-in-law have kindly offered to look after Estelle every Monday. Simply to spend some time with Energy Estelle, and to give me some time and space with Amelie.
And it’s worked out so well.
So far, Amelie and I have enjoyed mornings cuddling and chit-chatting, having long luxurious baby massages, and basically just enjoying each other’s company.
It’s quite different with Estelle in the house. Don’t get me wrong, Estelle loves Amelie and she’s always very keen to help with the baby. But when she is around, you have to make sure that Estelle doesn’t hold the baby too tight, that she doesn’t jump around when the baby is on the bed, that she doesn’t poke the baby’s eyes unintentionally… while trying to be positive about every interaction between the girls.
Sometimes, I feel bad that Amelie has to tolerate all the Estelle-this-and-that, but at the same time, she also gets the benefit of sitting in on numerous story-times, play-acts, tea-parties, cooking sessions, etc. But she doesn’t get as much one-on-one interaction. So… Mondays have been absolutely fantastic.

(Thanks Debbie for the romper!)
So far, Amelie has turned out to be quite a perfect textbook baby. She sleeps like a regular baby (phew!), she poos like a regular baby, she feeds like a regular baby. (well, as “regular” as the books defined it.) She’ll happily sleep the required hours, wake up for a feed and playtime, and suckle a little before settling down for the next nap. She even knows how to drift off back to slumberland by herself (!) should she awaken before she had enough sleep. (Estelle’s baby routine = sleep, feed, play, feed, rock and sing to sleep, sleep for 5 whole minutes, repeat.)
But she also has her own idiosyncracies. 1. She hates dirty diapers. No matter how absorbent a diaper is, she’s bound to complain. 2. She refuses to take the bottle and pacifier.
Other than that, she’s a happy, chirpy baby who idolises her sister. She can reach out to touch objects with her hands now. And you can really see the delight on her face when she is able to feel or rather whack the toys.

So yesterday, I took out a whole boxful of baby toys and cleared out one of the shelves in Estelle’s room for Amelie… Check out her many playmates!
